A treasure of the desert
The Sahara holds many secrets. On the Ennedi plateau, there is the Guelta d'Archei canyon. At its bed there are underground waters that have formed a system of wetlands and small reservoirs. High, majestic sandstone cliffs provide shade and offer respite to caravans traversing the desert.
Secrets of the Sahara
This place is sometimes called a miracle. Every day, hundreds of camels step into knee-deep water to quench their thirst. Paintings that date back to ancient times can be found in the recesses of the canyon, and its dark waters host one of the last colonies of Nile crocodiles in the Sahara. The sandstone has a warm, beige hue here. In the harsh sunlight it appears almost white.
